Biography

Don B. Chaffin Collegiate Research Professor – The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI)

Dr. Reed has appointments in Integrative Systems and Design, where he is Chair of the Design Science program, and Industrial and Operations Engineering, where he leads the Human Motion Simulation Laboratory in the Center for Ergonomics. Dr. Reed’s research focuses on vehicle safety, engineering anthropometry, and ergonomics. He has conducted research on occupant restraint systems, emphasizing restraint system optimization, crash dummy development, and computational modeling of vehicle occupants. He has developed tools for the ergonomic design of vehicle interiors, including widely used posture prediction and motion simulation algorithms for use with digital human figure models. He has conducted extensive research in engineering anthropometry and modeling of human anatomy. He is an author of more than 220 publications relating to humans in engineered systems. He has conducted research with a wide range of industry and government partners, including extensive work with major auto manufacturers and the U.S. Army. Dr. Reed is a Fellow in SAE International and a member of the SAE Human Accommodation and Design Devices Committee, Driver Vision Standards Committee, and Truck and Bus Human Factors Committee. He has received outstanding paper awards from SAE International, including the Arch T. Colwell Merit Award in 2005, the Myers Award in 2000, the Isbrandt Award for crash safety research in 1996 and 2004, and the Arnold W. Siegel International Transportation Safety Award in 2018. In 2015, Dr. Reed was honored by NHTSA with the U.S. Department of Transportation Special Award of Appreciation for outstanding leadership and special contributions in the field of motor vehicle safety and was elected to the International Research Council on the Biomechanics of Injury.
