Presentation Title: Effect of Human Drivers’ Time Delay & Heterogeneity on Traffic Stabilization Capability of CAVs

Abstract: The inherently erratic nature of human driving tends to trigger undesired waves that amplify as they propagate across vehicles upstream. This phenomenon, known as phantom jams, has been identified as one of the main causes of non-recurrent traffic congestion. The Purdue team will detail the controller they designed for use in a connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) to stabilize the flow of human-driven vehicles (HDVs) that are upstream. They consider HDV heterogeneity and the time delays associated with their perception-reaction time. Attendees will learn how these study findings can be beneficial to real-world deployments of CAV controllers for the purposes of traffic stability and safety.
Dr. Samuel Labi is a Professor at Purdue University’s Lyles School of Civil Engineering and the Associate Director of CCAT. He has authored two textbooks used in a number of universities worldwide: Transportation Decision Making and Introduction to Civil Engineering Systems. His research awards include TRB’s Woods and Mickel Award and ASCE’s Masters Award for outstanding and innovative work that advances transport systems. Dr. Labi is an associate editor for Computer-Aided Civil & Infrastructure Engineering, the Journal of Risk and Uncertainty in Engineering Systems, and the Journal of Infrastructure Systems. He is the chair of ASCE’s Economics & Finance committee and serves as a PI for five CCAT projects that address CAV human factors, driving simulation, infrastructure preparation, economics and finance, and operations modelling.
Yujie Li is a Ph.D. student at Lyles School of Civil Engineering, Purdue University, and a graduate researcher at CCAT. She earned her B.S. degree from Southeast University, China. Yujie’s research interests include artificial intelligence, machine learning, and control systems applications for connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) operations and modelling. Her current research focuses on controller design for CAVs as well as human factors and driving simulation in traffic environments with CAVs.
