Impacts of In-Vehicle Alert Systems on Situational Awareness and Driving Performance in SAE Level 3 Vehicle Automation
Principal Investigator(s):

Project Abstract:
Most levels of autonomy are associated with human drivers that will need to take over the AV in certain hazardous situations. This research project is investigating the features and benefits of alternative mechanisms for in-vehicle alerts for human drivers to take over AVs as and when needed. These mechanisms include audio and visual alert systems. The research is also developing strategies to promote safe transition of vehicle control. The research results are intended to inform policy and regulation geared toward automakers to ensure vehicle design that facilitate safe AV operations.
